SpyX headquarters really delivered with this kit for my 8-year-old daughter! I just learned it was named 2015 Product of the Year by Creative Child magazine. This kit is perfect for kids with siblings, as it allows them to track, warn of invading siblings, and listen in on them like a true spy. I love that everything fits neatly on a spy belt with belt clips. Her favorite gadgets included the motion detector, which caused some chaos for our dog for a couple of days before we turned it off, and the invisible ink pen. I know what you’re thinking—there are countless invisible ink pens out there—but this one has a secret compartment for on-the-go spy notes and a UV light to reveal the hidden message. The LED light is a fun laser pointer-style spy light that fits over the ear and provided plenty of entertainment. The ‘Micro Listener’ was a bit tricky for her, as the earpiece was a bit large, but watching her press it against the wall to eavesdrop on her brother was absolutely adorable. Definitely worth the investment—solid gear!

I bought this for my 6-year-old and was a bit hesitant after seeing some negative reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised! He absolutely loves it, and it met all his expectations. There are a few downsides: the micro ear listener is supposed to let you hear through walls, but you really have to speak almost directly into it to get sound through the earpiece. The spy pen works well overall, but I’ve had to tap it a bit for the light to turn on, and it doesn’t stay clipped to the belt very securely, although the other devices do. Additionally, the ear light can be a bit tight on his ear. However, considering this is a toy for kids, these issues are minor. He enjoys all of them and can unleash his imagination!

My son is a huge fan of Spy Gear, and we’ve purchased nearly every item they offer, often buying some more than once because they’re so well-loved and frequently used. His favorite part of this set was the invisible ink pen. Unfortunately, just hours after we received it, the pen went missing. We maintain a tidy and organized home and have searched everywhere imaginable, even in unusual spots, but it’s gone. Our current theory is that shortly after he last used it, some ink leaked out, making the pen itself invisible. We’re really hoping Spy Gear develops a GPS tracking product that can be attached to items or people being spied on, so we could track the pen in case of another invisibility incident when we buy it again. All the other items in the set are present and function as expected.
