These cameras work well on their own and can also be integrated with Echo Show devices, Fire TV sticks, and the Blink app on your phone using voice commands. However, if you want to unlock additional features, you’ll need to subscribe to the Blink cloud service. This service not only provides cloud storage but also allows access to most of the Blink Mini features, except for the ability to drop in and view a live feed through the aforementioned methods.
Without an active Blink subscription, you cannot use the Alexa app on any device to control the camera. According to Blink, even with the Blink Subscription, owners of Blink Video Doorbell, Outdoor, Indoor (gen 2), or Mini cameras receive motion alerts via the Blink app that allow you to access the camera’s Live View, but no clips are saved. It’s important to note that adding the Sync Module 2 doesn’t enhance that functionality.
If you’re considering using local storage with the Sync Module 2, keep in mind that its main purpose is to boost Wi-Fi for battery-operated Blink Outdoor cameras. Since the Minis are plugged into AC power, they don’t require this module. The Sync Module 2 helps the outdoor cameras save battery life by offloading Wi-Fi uploads, but it doesn’t provide recording or motion detection without a subscription. Additionally, if you have an active subscription—whether it’s a free trial or a paid plan—the module serves only as a daily backup device and cannot function as a local storage solution for videos.
Don’t expect to use the Sync Module 2 as a local storage device upon setup. The trial subscription is automatic and prevents it from functioning that way, so you’ll need to keep the cameras and module for over 30 days before you can explore the Sync Module 2’s capabilities. I purchased the Sync Module 2 along with a 128 GB USB stick, only to find that it added no extra functionality. For now, my Minis are sending motion-triggered recordings to the cloud storage included in the trial subscription, regardless of my preferences.
While I’m disappointed with the Sync Module 2, the Minis still meet my needs at a low cost. My primary goal with the Blink Minis was to keep an eye on my other property during winter months to ensure everything is in order. I wasn’t looking for continuous recording or a high-end security system; I already have a professional service for that. For me, these Blink cameras provide peace of mind, and in that sense, they do a great job.
Your satisfaction will largely depend on your expectations for the Blink Mini camera, the Blink Home app, and the available functionality.
