I’m grateful I don’t have a personal life, because this little spy gadget is incredibly effective! We live in a two-story house and tested it from the top floor to the bottom, and it performed excellently, even when we were speaking softly. I had a blast playing around with it as a parent! I would definitely recommend it, but be warned: it works so well that if you have a secret to keep, make sure it’s not in operation!

Update: My son was really excited to get this spy gear device, so we tried ordering a third unit. Unsurprisingly, this one also failed to work, producing only a clicking sound in the headphones when the trigger is pressed, with no other sounds. It’s utterly useless and a waste of time and resources. Given the experience we’ve had, I doubt it would last long even if it had worked. This will be returned at Amazon’s expense.

It’s possible that the negative reviews come from users who tested the recording feature directly on the device, which may explain their experience with poor sound quality. I rated this product highly because I connected it to my small digital recorder and listened to the parabolic sound through my personal headphones. My process involved connecting the device to the recorder using an audio cord from the audio (out) jack to the MIC jack on the recorder. I would start the digital recorder in record mode, press the hearing lever on the parabolic device, and once I captured what I wanted, I would release the lever and stop the recording. When I played back the sound on my digital recorder, it perfectly matched what I heard through the headphones, showcasing the quality of the parabolic sound.

While there’s a bit of extra white noise, recording to a digital recorder and then transferring it to a computer can help minimize that. This isn’t a device for FBI-level surveillance, so don’t expect that kind of performance. I purchased it to help locate elusive birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and other wildlife on my protected habitat land to track their activity, and it excels at that.
I recommend placing women’s nylons over the sound shell to reduce wind noise. Additionally, it can pick up on hand movements, so using a cotton “butcher’s glove” or wrapping some foam around the handle is a good idea. I also added a layer of thin memory foam behind the shell, which significantly reduces ambient noise from other directions.
In summary, all devices in this price range have similar challenges. With a bit of time and effort, it can be a highly effective tool for various purposes. Like anything else, you get out what you put in.

However, I encountered an issue with the eyepiece, which easily falls off and is quite challenging to reattach. Although I managed to get it back on, the focus is not as sharp as it used to be. I’m returning this product because it doesn’t meet even basic toy quality standards. My son kept expressing his disappointment, and after his fifth mention, I finally understood his frustration. The sound quality is the worst I’ve ever experienced—garbled, muffled, and just noisy. Unless you’re within 10-12 feet of the source, it’s nearly impossible to make out anything clearly. It’s like living next to a busy highway with a constant, indistinct roar. I’d rather pay an extra $50 or even $100 for something that actually works, as this $50 item doesn’t feel like toy pricing. Based on its performance and materials, I’d rate it as a $20 Secret Santa gift, not the $60 it’s marketed as on Amazon. I’m starting to question Amazon’s promotional system; they shouldn’t endorse such low-quality products at inflated prices. I expected better, similar to what you’d find on Wayfair, where at least they curate decent items. It seems like whoever warehouses the most gets the cheapest deal. I really hope the other products they sell are better, as they all look quite similar, with just branding differences. This has been a lesson learned for me, especially with electronics that claim to be deals. While there are some gems out there, this isn’t one of them. I don’t want to deal with returning items or see the disappointment on my child’s face when something they worked hard to earn turns out to be a letdown. Toys shouldn’t mirror real-life frustrations. At the very least, it might serve as a conversation starter if it’s lying around when friends come over, but I would’ve preferred to rent something out if it actually worked!

I was thrilled to receive this device for Christmas, but unfortunately, it didn’t meet my expectations. It only amplifies sounds from about 15 feet away at most and tends to pick up nearby noises—like the cord brushing against it—much more loudly. Such a disappointment.
